Shubman Gill will miss India’s first game against Australia

Shubman Gill, India’s star opener, will need to get replaced after getting diagnosed with dengue. Ishan Kishan (the team’s backup batter who may step in as the opener or middle-order batter) is the obvious choice.

Shubman Gill was diagnosed with dengue

Due to dengue fever, Shubman Gill will not play in India’s opening match of the 2023 World Cup against Australia. In the past few days, Gill skipped India’s practice sessions at the MA Chidambaram Stadium due to illness. He has dengue fever now, according to tests. Dengue usually takes a week to heal, so Gill can’t play for India on October 8 in their opening World Cup match.

An immense setback for India

The World Cup hosts received a severe setback. With 1,230 runs from 20 games at an average of 72.35 and a strike rate of 104.95, Gill is India’s highest run-scorer in ODIs this year. He is also the top run scorer in all of cricket in the current year. He surpassed 50 and 100 five times in the 20 ODI innings he played this year. This year in ODIs, no other batter made it over three centuries.

Shubman Gill not well : India has to replace the opener

India will need to find a replacement for their star opener. The obvious choice is to add Ishan Kishan, the squad’s backup batter who can fill in as the opener or middle-order bat, depending on needs. The alternative would be to encourage KL Rahul to start with Rohit Sharma. Rahul has recently settled in the middle of the order, so that seems unlikely.

Kishan has an exceptional record as an opener

In seven ODI matches as an opener, Kishan has an outstanding record. He scored 448 runs at an impressive average of 74.7 and a strike rate of 125.1, including the memorable double-century he hit against Bangladesh last year.

In addition, Kishan would offer a left-handed choice at the top of the list. India wouldn’t mind having Kishan at the top, given Mitchell Starc’s skill with the white new ball, particularly when facing right-handed batters.
