Cricket Australia announced its 15-member team for the ICC ODI World Cup


Cricket Australia has announced its 15-member squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup, with Pat Cummins as captain. The team includes senior players like David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith. However, Marnus Labuschagne didn’t make it, and all-rounder Aaron Hardie, pacer Nathan Ellis, and spinner Tanveer Sangha did not make the 18-person preliminary squad. Sean Abbott was selected as a pacer, while Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa as spinners. Alex Carey will be the top pick for wicketkeeper-batsman following his outstanding performance at the 2019 World Cup in England and Wales.

Australia initially named an early squad of 18 players for the 2023 ODI World Cup, but that number fell to 15 on September 6.

Cricket Australia disclosed its 15-member squad for the 2023 ICC World Cup, and Pat Cummin will serve as its captain. There was no place for Marnus Labuschagne despite the selection of senior players like David Warner, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, and Steve Smith.

Even the powerful middle-order hitter Tim David didn’t secure a spot on the team. All-rounder Aaron Hardie, pacer Nathan Ellis, and young spinner Tanveer Sangha were the players who did not make the 18-person preliminary squad that Australia had previously announced.

Sean Abbott was selected as pacer while Ashton and Zampa as spinners

When comparing the squad, it is clear that Sean Abbott, a fast bowler, prevails over Nathan Ellis for the last position as backup pacer. The selectors preferred the spin duo of Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa.

Alex Carey will be a top pick for wicketkeeper-batsman

The team’s two wicketkeeper batters are Alex Carey and Josh Inglis. Carey will undoubtedly be the top pick, given his outstanding performance at the most recent World Cup in England and Wales in 2019.

Bailey’s statement

“Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Steve Smith’s return to play plans are on schedule. All are in a good position to reactivate in the upcoming weeks and may get selected for the upcoming series against India,” according to Bailey.

“Eight one-day matches in South Africa and India must still get played before the final squad is due for announcement. Two World Cup exhibition matches to follow, providing plenty of opportunities to continue the tournament buildup.”
