Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty created history by becoming the first Indian pair to win a Super 1000 badminton tournament. Their opponents in the final were the Malaysian world champions Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik. Despite facing some tense moments, including the loss of four match points, the Indians managed to secure a 21-17, 21-18 victory.
In the semifinals, Rankireddy and Shetty staged an impressive comeback to defeat Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung Jae from Korea with a scoreline of 17-21, 21-19, 21-18, setting up the stage for the Sunday final.
The final itself lasted only 43 minutes, with the Indian duo outperforming the current world champions. Although they stumbled initially in the first game, they quickly regained their momentum and held an 11-9 lead at the mid-game break. The second game witnessed a dominant performance by the Indians, and despite a late surge from the Malaysian pair, they couldn’t withstand the pressure and were ultimately defeated.
Satwiksairaj expressed his delight after the match, stating that they had prepared well for the event and received tremendous support from the crowd throughout the week. He acknowledged their previous poor head-to-head record against Chia and Yik but emphasized their focus on taking one point at a time, which ultimately led to their victory.
