Rameshwaram Cafe Blast: What Happened in 9 minutes when the suspect was in the cafe

Bengaluru, known as India’s IT hub, experienced a bomb explosion on Friday at the bustling Rameshwaram cafe, resulting in injuries to at least 10 individuals. The explosion was reportedly triggered by an improvised explosive device (IED). Surveillance footage from the cafe captured a person of interest spending approximately nine minutes inside, during which they placed a suspicious bag.

Authorities, including the Karnataka Police, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and National Security Guards (NSG), are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the incident. They are examining the connections of four terrorism suspects from Karnataka, who were allegedly involved in the 2022 Mangaluru blast.

The suspect, captured in various CCTV clips, entered the cafe at 11:34 AM, conversing on the phone, and concealed their identity with glasses and a cap. Carrying a bag, the individual ordered Rava Idli at the counter around 11:38 AM. Subsequently, at 11:43 AM, the suspect left the cafe without the bag.

Law enforcement authorities are meticulously tracing the suspect’s movements using CCTV footage. Karnataka’s Home Minister, G Parameshwara, disclosed the acquisition of 40-50 CCTV recordings related to the blast and expressed confidence in the imminent arrest of the suspect.

Among the four suspects under investigation, two are believed to be abroad, while one is identified by the alias “Colonel.” Notably, the Rameshwaram cafe blast shares striking similarities with the 2022 Mangaluru explosion, including the use of identical detonators, digital timers, and batteries.

Expressing dismay over the incident, Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah emphasized the need for swift action against the perpetrators, echoing sentiments shared by Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar regarding the unfortunate recurrence of such events in the state.
