Barbie Surpasses The Dark Knight at Box Office


Barbie, starring Ryan Gosling and Margot Robbie, has broken a 15-year record at the box office. The movie, directed by Greta Gerwig, had the highest opening weekend gross for a female director, with USD 155 million. It also surpassed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which previously held the record with $24.6 million, to have the best-ever Monday box office performance for a Warner Bros. film. The Indian market also saw Barbie perform admirably, earning 17.50 crore net over three days on fewer than 850 screens.

That’s not all, though, as Variety reports that Barbie surpassed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, which previously held the record with $24.6 million, to have the best-ever Monday box office performance for a Warner Bros. film.

The Berbenheimer craze

At the box office, the movie competed with Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” And as Oppenheimer and Barbie sold well, particularly the former, the Berbenheimer craze was popular in the West and spread to India.

This movie “also punched above its worth in terms of the Indian market is involved,” according to Box Office India. The combined box office revenue for the two films is 65.75 crore net (or almost 80 crore gross), of which 60 crore net is from the English-language version alone.

“The Indian movie industry is into presenting cheap and even complimentary tickets whereas both of these movies possess an overall average ticket cost that exceeds more than INR 300 and has still had viewers increasing in numbers.”

“Barbie performed admirably, earning 17.50 crore net over three days on fewer than 850 screens. Although the genre is not very popular in India, some of the film craze that originated in the West also spread to India. In North America and Europe, the movie has easily surpassed Oppenheimer,” according to BOI.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling portray Barbie and Ken, respectively, in the clichéd roles of leaving Barbieland to find themselves in the outside world. John Cena, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Michael Cera, Helen Mirren, and Dua Lipa also have roles in the project.

Movie reportedly cost USD 145 million, excluding a marketing campaign that helped the film become popular before it even hit theatres. Production companies for this movie include NB/GG Pictures, LuckyChap Entertainment, Heyday Films, and Mattel Films. Warner Bros. Pictures is in charge of distribution.
