American Envoy’s POK Visit Raises Eyebrows

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti justified Donald Blome’s recent trip to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, stating that the American delegation also visited Jammu and Kashmir earlier. He also declared that the issue between India and Pakistan must get resolved between the two nations without any foreign intervention. Blome spent six days in Gilgit-Baltistan and met with local leaders and government representatives. He also visited Gwadar, a port town where China invested significantly in its Belt and Road Initiative. The head of the opposition in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kazim Mesum, expressed alertness over the unusual activities of the US ambassador. Earlier, India published a stern statement condemning US Congresswoman Illhan Omar’s visit to POK.

Is it a question mark on Modi government’s foreign policy ?

Questions and fingers are being justifiably pointed towards Modi government’s foreign policy of leaning too much towards to the west when our close neighbors and traditional partners feel insecure and risking the west playing dice with India. Time will unfold and things will get clearer as there are no conclusions that can be drawn at this moment.

The US ambassador to India asserts that a delegation also traveled to J&K

Neither the US embassy in Islamabad nor the Pakistani administration issued declarations or informed reporters of Blome’s trip.

The US Ambassador to India explained Blome’s recent trip

“The American delegation also stopped by Jammu and Kashmir,” according to US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti, who justified his counterpart to Islamabad Donald Blome’s recent trip to Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Garcetti: The issue between India and Pakistan must get resolved

Garcetti told reporters in Delhi, “We will remain involved, but this is a matter we very firmly believe must get resolved between India and Pakistan, not by any outside entity, including the US.”

The US is treating J&K as a contested region

The statement made by Ambassador Garcetti seems to suggest that the US is treating Jammu and Kashmir, a legitimate portion of Indian territory, as a contested region, as Pakistani propaganda has deceitfully labeled it.

Blome spent six days in POK

“Blome spent six days last week in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir region of Gilgit-Baltistan, where he met with local leaders and government representatives,” according to The Dawn. According to the newspaper, not the US embassy in Islamabad nor the Pakistani government delivered any remarks or updated the press about Blome’s visit.

Blome also visited Gwadar

Blome also traveled to Gwadar, a port town where China invested significant investments as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, a few days ahead of his journey to Gilgit-Baltistan. Gwadar remains built under Chinese supervision and lies near the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil transporting route in the Arabian Sea.

Kazim Mesum expressed alert over the unusual operation

The Dawn reported that Kazim Mesum, the head of the opposition in Gilgit-Baltistan, expressed alert over “the obscure operations” of the US ambassador there. “There is an official process for any of the nation’s ambassadors to make a trip to the area,” he continued.

India published a stern statement on Ilhan Omar’s visit

Blome’s trip to POK followed that of US Congresswoman Illhan Omar, who made the first notable visit by a US official.

At that point, India published a stern statement: “She went to the region of Jammu and Kashmir that Pakistan has illegally control. If a politician of this caliber wants to practice her narrow politics at home, that is her prerogative; however, if she violates the sovereignty of our country in the process, then it becomes our prerogative.”
