The counter-intelligence team of the Punjab police today detained Pappalpreet Singh, a tight associate of wanted criminal radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh, in Hoshiarpur, Punjab.

According to the police, he was detained by the strict National Security Act. After their daring evacuation from a police mass surveillance in Jalandhar last month, the two remained close companions at all times. Once they arrived in Hoshiarpur, they each took a different path out of the city.

The Punjab Police and the Delhi Police’s special cell collaborated on the operation that resulted in the arrest.

The Punjab police canceled all officers’ leaves in the state until Baisakhi celebrations on April 14 after Amritpal Singh, who has so far managed to avoid arrest, asked for a gathering of the Sikhs at the end of April.

Ampritpal Request for the congregation
The separatist has requested that the leaders of the leading Sikh organization, Akal Takht, call the “Sarbat Khalsa” rally for Baisakhi in Bathinda, Punjab. In addition, he requested that a religious procession be organized by the jathedars (chiefs of the Akal Takht) to travel from the Amritsar Akal Takht to the Damdama Sahib in Bathinda in advance of the Baisakhi gathering.

After the leader of the “Waris Punjab De” organization made an unconfirmed video appeal regarding the Baisakhi get-together, security measures in Bathinda have been tightened.

Giani Harpreet Singh, the head of Akal Takht, has pleaded with Amritpal to turn himself in to the police because the Sikh organization will not negotiate with the authorities on his behalf or allow him to give up at Akal Takht.

Following Amritpal’s proposal, the top gurdwara organization Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) stated that the Akal Takht chief alone has the power to determine whether to ask such a gathering after discussing with Sikh academics and experts.

There were only two other times that “Sarbat Khalsa” religious groups were called, in 2015 and 1986. The final one took place on February 16, 1986.

“I’ll be seen by everyone very soon. I’m not the type of person to travel abroad and release videos, “he declared.

Amritpal has been evading capture since March 18, when Punjab Police began an extensive search operation for him.

Ajnala police station in Amritsar was attacked by Amritpal’s supporters on February 23 in response to their demands for the release of one of his close associates, Lovepreet Toofan. Nearly three weeks later, on March 1, the crackdown took place.
