Cyclone Biparjoy: Mumbai may experience rain, reducing visibility along Gujarat’s coasts; the Government has taken precautionary measures
The Indian Coast Guard has 31 disaster response teams, including seven large ships, on standby for relief and rescue, according to Manish Pathak, the organization’s deputy director general (operations).
Cyclone Biparjoy began to hinder daily life
Before landing on June 15 close to the Gujarati fishing port of Jakhau, Cyclone Biparjoy, also known as “Biporjoy” and given the name by Bangladesh, had already begun to hinder daily life. On Tuesday morning, one can see the Indian Coast Guard ships patrolling near the Gujarati coast, and Western Railways reported 67 canceled trains. Images from Mumbai’s Worli Sea Face showed high tidal waves in the Arabian Sea.
Actions of The Indian Coast Guard’s disaster response teams
The Indian Coast Guard has 31 disaster response teams. It includes seven sizable ships deployed off the coasts of Gujarat (2) and Maharashtra (5 ships), on standby for relief and rescue, according to Manish Pathak, Deputy Director General (Operations) of the Indian Coast Guard.
“These ships have all the necessary materials and can withstand rough seas. In the past four to five cyclones, no fisherman has perished. A warning has been issued to the port authority, mariners, and fishermen to begin taking safety measures. Due to the closure of fishing, there are no large, mechanized trawlers at sea. They were brought back to port after being alerted by our helicopters and planes via VHF and loudspeakers,” according to Pathak, who also noted that state fisheries had confirmed the return of all boats and ships. He also stated that Dornier and ALH are conducting operations before the cyclone’s arrival.
The CM of Gujarat spoke with PM Modi
Bhupendra Patel, the chief minister of Gujarat, claimed that he and Prime Minister Modi spoke on the phone about the situation and state of preparation for the cyclone. The CM added that the PM promised to support Gujarat in every way.
Gujarat evacuated the 10 kilometers of the coastal area
Gujarat hosts a control room for the railways, and field staff are on high alert. Gujarat will evacuate those who live within 10 kilometers of the coast. Strong winds caused an accident that killed three people as Cyclone Biparjoy approached Gujarat. 67 trains bound for coastal Gujarat are short-terminated by Western Railway.
IMD issued a Yellow alert in Kerala
Pinarayi Vijayan, the chief minister of Kerala, said in a statement that Cyclone Biparjoy, which is currently over the central-eastern Arabian Sea, will likely bring heavy rain to his state in the coming days.
Heavy rains are expected in Kerala, prompting a yellow alert.
Cyclone Biparjoy may bring rain to Mumbai
According to the most recent forecast from IMD, Mumbai should expect a partly cloudy sky with the possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in the city and suburbs today. Strong winds that occasionally reach 45 to 55 kmph are also very likely, and hot and muggy conditions are also probable in the city and suburbs.
Current position of Cyclone Biparjoy
The “extremely catastrophic cyclonic storm” was located in the northeast and east-central Arabian Sea at 2:30 am, about 290 km southwest of Porbandar and 360 km south-southwest of Jakhau Port, the IMD stated. By the evening on June 15, the cyclone, according to the IMD, will pass through Saurashtra and Kutch close to Jakhau Port.
