Six states are holding elections today to fill vacancies in the assembly, setting up a massive showdown between the BJP-led alliance and the opposition’s INDIA bloc. Seven seats in these six states will have byelections.
Bageshwar in Uttarakhand, Boxanagar and Dhanpur in Tripura, Dhupguri in West Bengal, Dumri in Jharkhand, Ghosi in Uttar Pradesh, and Puthuppally in Kerala are the seats that will be voting today. September 8 will see the counting of votes in all seven seats.
In Bageshwar, Boxanagar, Dhupguri, Dumri, and Puthuppally, byelections had to occur due to the passing of the incumbent MLAs. The resignation of their MLAs prompted new elections in Ghosi and Dhanpur.
INDIA bloc is holding its first elections
The opposition parties who formed the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to run in elections “together as far as possible” are now holding the first elections since their formation.
Competition for these Seven seats
# The passing of BJP MLA Chandan Ram Dass prompted the byelection in Bageshwar. Parwati, the wife of a former BJP MLA, is running against Basant Kumar of the Congress and Bhagawati Prasad of the Samajwadi Party.
# After the demise of the member of the Left party, Samsul Haque, the seat in Boxanagar is now open to direct competition between the CPM and the BJP.
# In Dhanpur, Pratima Bhoumik of the BJP resigned to keep her seat in the Lok Sabha, leaving the assembly seat open. In Dhanpur, the BJP nominated her brother Bindu Debnath, while the CPM nominated Kaushik Chanda.
# After Bishnupada Roy of the BJP passed away, the seat in Dhupguri became vacant. The BJP appointed Tapasi Roy to run against Nirmal Chandra Roy of the Trinamool and Ishwar Chandra Roy of the CPM.
# Jagarnath Mahto, a Jharkhand Mukti Morcha MLA, left Dumri vacant, and his wife, Bebi Devi, is running against Yashoda Devi of the NDA and Abdul Rizvi of the AIMIM under the INDIA banner.
# Dara Singh Chauhan, a former Ghoshi MLA for the Samajwadi Party, recently joined the BJP. He is now running for office as the BJP’s candidate against Sudhakar Singh, a supporter of his former party who also enjoys the backing of the Congress.
# Following the death of Oommen Chandy, Puthuppally is voting today. Chandy Oommen, the veteran leader’s son, is running against Jaick C. Thomas of the CPM for the Congress-led front.
