Massive 4-Lane Bridge in Bihar Collapses

The bridge, which Nitish Kumar opened in 2014 and connects Sultanganj and Khagaria, collapsed in Bihar.

An under-construction bridge in Bihar Collapses

On Sunday, an under-construction bridge across the Ganga river in Bihar’s Bhagalpur district collapsed like a house of cards. The four-lane bridge connecting Aguwani in the Khagaria and Sultanganj in the Bhagalpur district fell for the second time.

According to witnesses, numerous men were working on the bridge when it began to collapse. But no fatalities have been noted up to this point.

Nitish Kumar called for an investigation

The Chief Minister has called for an investigation into the incident and stated that the at-fault officials should face harsh punishment.

The bridge linked the Sultanganj and Khagaria districts and was officially opened in 2014 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

Bihar Administrative Response

“Yes, I know that four to five pillars of the under-construction Aguwani-Sultanganj bridge fell apart. The government is in contact with authorities from the relevant departments,” Bhagalpur District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen reported.

Extension of the deadline for finishing

The bridge link the Sultanganj and Khagaria districts and was officially opened in 2014 by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Due to intense wind and rain last year, the bridge’s structure collapsed. The deadline to finish the bridge was extended eight times. SP Singla Constructions Private Limited was constructing the bridge.

As a link between north and south Bihar, the bridge had a significant importance from a development standpoint.

Concealment or a prepared demolition?

The Bihar government stated that it was intentional to remove the collapsed section because experts had identified design flaws in the 3.1-kilometer-long bridge.

Tejashwi Yadav, the deputy chief minister of Bihar, and Pratyay Amrit, the additional chief secretary of the department responsible for road construction, held a press conference on Sunday following widespread social media sharing of pictures of the collapsed bridge that drew criticism from the BJP, according to PTI.

In a statement about the incident, Samrat Choudhary, the state’s BJP president, claimed that “corruption is rampant” in the Nitish Kumar-led Bihar government.

The bridge’s structure collapsed earlier as well

In the Begusarai district, a bridge split in half in December last year and fell into the Burhi Gandak River. The bridge had not yet been accessible to the public due to the absence of an access road, so nobody was hurt in the incident. During the accident last year, an official remarked, “It was to be inaugurated soon, but it collapsed before that.”
