An official reported that an RPF constable shot and killed four people, including an assistant sub-inspector, on board a Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express train traveling through Maharashtra on Monday.

According to the official, the RPF ASI and three other train passengers perished shortly after 5 am from gunfire from the constable’s automatic weapon—about 100 km separate Palghar from Mumbai.

Authorities remark on the incident

Initial evidence indicates that the altercation occurred in coach B5 of the Jaipur Express train (12956) at 5.23 am. “It seems like an ASI head of the escort got fired by CT Chetan, who appeared on escort duty. The train stopped at Borivali, and reports also mentioned three civilian casualties along with ASI. This constable is now apprehended. DCP North GRP got notified,” according to authorities.

Western Railway spokesperson’s comment

“In a tragic incident on July 31, 2023, transporting staff cop Chetan Kumar fired at his fellow escort in charge ASI Tika Ram in Train No. 12956 Jaipur-Mumbai Superfast Express… After killing his colleague, the constable first threatened passengers with a gun. After the alarm chain snapped, constable Chetan Kumar sat close to Dahisar and attempted to run. However, also taken into custody by RPF/Bhayandar with the weapon,” according to a Western Railway spokesperson.
