Sabber Kyaw Min, director of an NGO

In the words of Sabber Kyaw Min, creator and director of the Rohingya Human Rights Initiative, an NGO that works to better the community, almost all refugees residing in these shelters are rickshaw pullers, ragpickers, and vegetable vendors.

Sabber Kyaw Min’s statement

“The FRRO agents were aware during the refugee camp that they possessed a list of at least 17 refugees, and they selected some of them. They were known among them for having participated in the violence,” he stated.

According to Min, the refugees were forced out of their residences on Thursday as an unexpected razing carried out by heavily armed forces. Since several of them had to show up before a specialized division of the police, everyone was afraid of arbitrary imprisonment.

The NGO will help the police if any refugees participate in illegal activity, Min continued, but carrying out such searches makes the refugees feel uneasy and persecuted. “This is a discriminatory act and wrongful practice against them. People in the camps are worried, and their circumstance is dire. They treat them as though they were dacoits or offenders. They’re just trying to get by,” he said.
